Jakarta, 28 April 2026 — The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) met with the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) to discuss strategic issues concerning women's human rights, persistent challenges to gender equality, and opportunities to strengthen international collaboration within the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.

The meeting took place during a visit to Indonesia by a GIWPS delegation led by Ambassador Melanne Verveer, accompanied by women leaders from various sectors. The visit provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on progress in women's leadership, explore lessons from Komnas Perempuan's work, and identify opportunities for international cooperation to support women's leadership across different sectors in Indonesia.

During the meeting, GIWPS expressed its appreciation for Komnas Perempuan's role in advancing women's human rights and addressing violence against women in Indonesia. The delegation acknowledged the Commission's experience and initiatives as valuable contributions to advancing the global Women, Peace and Security agenda.

The dialogue brought together members of the GIWPS delegation, representatives of UN Women, and Komnas Perempuan. Participants exchanged perspectives on the Commission's mandate and initiatives, recent developments affecting women's rights in Indonesia, ongoing challenges, and potential areas for future collaboration.

Komnas Perempuan shared its efforts to prevent and eliminate violence against women, strengthen protection and support services for survivors, advocate for policy reforms, and integrate gender perspectives into key national and international policy agendas. The Commission also highlighted persistent challenges, including unequal access to protection services, structural barriers to gender equality, and the need for stronger coordination and collaboration across sectors.

GIWPS further encouraged Komnas Perempuan to share its experiences and good practices more widely through international platforms and networks. Such exchanges could contribute to global learning and cooperation on the Women, Peace and Security agenda while increasing international recognition of Indonesian women's leadership and contributions to social change.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international networks to create further opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and strategic partnerships. Komnas Perempuan expressed its commitment to exploring avenues for cooperation that could advance women's rights and gender equality at the national, regional, and global levels.

Komnas Perempuan was represented at the meeting by Commissioners Sondang Frishka Simanjuntak and Rr. Sri Agustini, along with staff members from the International Advocacy Division.
